The Ceremony to Induct! Um..Amazing?
Welcome to all the inducted members, you are all officially 2008-2009 members of the River Hill Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America! Congratulations! You know hold on your shoulders an amazing honor but also an intense responsibility. FBLA members are leaders, not followers, you took an oath during the ceremony to lead this school responsibly and that is your true task.
Okay, onto the review! There are really no words to describe the amazing-ness of this inductions ceremony, it was absolutely wonderful. The entire room was designed by Brooks, and he did an amazing, no, phenomenal job. I was pleasantly surprised by the keynote speaker, Mrs. Hadley, who was very interesting. I loved the activity; even though I had no answers to any of the questions…I was looking for SpongeBob. Where was SpongeBob? Do you guys know what generation we are? Generation Y/Millennials! Finally, I’d like to congratulate Mr. Phil Salopek for becoming our business person of the year, we are proud to have you apart of our organization.
Tomorrow is our Competitions Meeting, be there or be square! Um, and you can’t actually be square, because it’s MADATORY! So you are spared from being square! See you there!

NFLC- Reflection and Redirection
Last week, November 14th and 15th was the National Fall Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. Mr. and Scott Salopek along with Govin Vatsan and I were given the opportunity to travel to DC and stay at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. It was a national conference to rival the best, the people I met and the time I spent there will never be forgotten. Lissa asked me earlier today, “How was the Conference?” and I answered, “I felt recharged”, and that is completely true.
After a conference like that, you remember why you work so hard, why we, as the Future Business Leader’s of America, do what we do. We want to make a mark on the world, and the people there have done just that. They have personally made a mark on me and many others by just standing up and speaking out. Our national slogan this year is Get the Edge! and I really felt like I did that.
One of the bigger lessons for me was to take responsibility for my actions and that is something I am really going to press to do this year. I feel like, every time I push the blame on someone else, I am losing respect, and rightly so. So from on I vow to take more responsibility and be a more active leader in our organization.
Okay, so now onto the actual happenings in the conference. THE PRESIDENT OF CHINA WAS IN OUR HOTEL! Literally, there was secret service everywhere, and of course my room is in the tower of doom that they block out every time he “walks” by. I say walk because a majority of the time “he” walks by it is a decoy and the real president is taking a completely different route. Mr. Grant Baldwin, our closing session keynote speaker talked about it in his blog, here is the link!
I also met with the Eastern Region Executive Board on a daily basis, just to get to know the people that I now work with. One night we all got together and played Uno and while that wasn’t business related I learned how to play a new game. I spent a lot of time with Jenna Leung and Zachary Mason who are Vice-President’s Assistants on the EREB. I also spent time with Paul Cohen (Um, I’m not even going to tell you his position, you should know that), but he was bouncing between all the sessions and was making sure everything ran smoothly.
The majority of the two-day conference was devoted to workshops, one after the other in rapid succession, and after a few of them my head was spinning. They were so action packed, I really felt like I would Get the Edge! and I did. One amazing workshop I went to was on icebreaker activities that I can’t wait to do with you all. Another was about public speaking; it was an amazing workshop about public speaking anxiety given by Philesa Monden, North Carolina State President. I went up to her afterwards and got her email address and gave her mine, and she sent me a copy of the PowerPoint! I can’t wait to go through that with you all as well! All in all, the conference was a grea
